Tucson, a city often called the Soul of the Sonoran Desert, is a culturally and historically rich city with something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or you are visiting for a short time, getting to know this city and all it has to offer is well worth it.
When it comes to Tucson, there’s no better place to start your day than with us at eegee’s. We love our city as much as anyone and welcome you to explore a bit of its history with us. Here are our recommendations for must-experience locations around the city.
Located in Downtown Tucson, The Fox Theatre is nothing short of a local landmark. Opening in 1930, this art deco-style theatre is something quite special. Often called the Crown Jewel of Downtown, it began as a location to see “talkies” and progressed through the Depression to offer live performances of all genres.
It’s noted for its vaudeville performances, community events, and even a location where the Saturday morning screenings of the Mickey Mouse Club took place. It wasn’t uncommon through the last 50 years for people to stop in at eegee’s after enjoying a show to grab a quick meal and an eegee, our famous ice cold frozen beverage. There’s nothing quite as special as the Arizona Historical Society Museum providing exceptional opportunities to explore the history of the whole Southwest region. It’s where you can see Wyatt Earp’s ring as well as the rifle used by Geronimo.
Another exceptional experience that shows the beauty of this area is Tohono Chul Park, an award-winning botanical garden. For more than 25 years, this park has taught us about nature, culture and art, and how all three come together.
Its exhibits are stunning. It’s often easy to see hummingbirds and butterflies in the garden, or you can explore the art museum that’s located on site. They put on a variety of events throughout the year, including some classes for those who wish to learn gardening.
After you stop in at eegee’s for a grinder and fries, head over to the Pima Air and Space Museum, it’s one of the best opportunities to see historical planes. In fact, it’s the third largest aviation museum in the world and there are over 300 aircrafts on display. This museum opened in 1976 and spans about 150 acres.
It’s home to some of the most interesting aircraft, including the Lockheed Tristar, a plane that was used as Air Force One by President John Kennedy. Pima Air and Space Museum offers a tour of the Boneyard seen in the iconic 80s movie Can’t Buy Me Love. For war history buffs, the same Foundation also operates the Titan Missile Museum nearby that has a striking display of power and advanced technology.
If you want a truly interesting cultural experience, make a trip to Arizona Folklore Preserve. It’s where you can enjoy a performance that teaches about the area’s heritage and people through a wide range of performances, including singers, poets, storytellers, and musicians.
It is located just south of Sierra Vista in Ramsey Canyon and is an excellent hidden gem of a destination for those who want to learn more about the folklore.
While you may be thinking more about our fantastic food and frozen treats, we want to share with you some of the history of eegee’s, too. For more than 50 years, our locations have been a truly treasured part of Tucson’s story. The desert is hot, and we have everything you need to stay cool.
When two buddies got together in 1971, it was all about finding a way to stay cool, with a focus on frozen lemon drinks. They did so out of a vending truck driving around town, going to sporting events, and hanging out at the University of Arizona. We were one of the first fast food trucks in the state, later transitioning to brick and mortar locations. With over 25 locations today across the state, most people have stopped in at least once to check us out (and if not, we’re waiting for you!)
Mission San Xavier del Bac is a Spanish Mission founded in the 17th Century. Located in the Sonora Desert, it was taken from its Jesuit founders in the 18th Century and then given to the Franciscans. The beauty of this location is hard to pass up, and it takes some time to explore it all when you visit for a tour. The architecture of this location is nothing short of spectacular, and as a National Historic Landmark, it is a must see for anyone that is looking for a way to explore Tucson’s history.
There sure are a lot of museums in Tucson. Why not stop by a nearby eegee’s for a few cold drinks and then make a trip to a few museums so you can learn as much as you can about this city? The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum is a must to have on your list.
Sitting on 21 acres, it is one of the best attractions to explore. A portion of it is a zoo, where animals roam freely within their exhibits. There’s also a botanical garden and a natural history museum that makes up this location. It’s easy enough to see some of the endangered species in Tucson, like the Mexican wolf and the ocelot. Make sure you stop to see the cactus garden as well.
If you are looking for events that really make Tucson special, there are plenty happening all throughout the year. The Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase is a fun look at the geological side of the city. You can also check out the Cologard Classic, a pro golf event. The Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair and the Tucson Festival of Books are also fun locations to explore.
